Chapter 6: The Long Ascent

Chloe spent the entire morning staring out at the sprawling city skyline.
The towering buildings no longer felt like a kingdom she was destined to rule.
They felt like an impenetrable fortress that had permanently locked its gates against her.
She knew a simple phone call or a handwritten note would not suffice for an apology.
Eleanor Sterling was not a woman who accepted empty, superficial gestures.
Chloe had to face her in person, regardless of how terrifying the prospect seemed.
She walked into her massive walk-in closet, bypassing the racks of bright, ostentatious designer dresses.
She selected a simple, tailored black dress and a pair of understated flat shoes.
She brushed her blonde hair back into a neat, plain ponytail, leaving her diamond earrings in their velvet box.
When she looked in the mirror, she barely recognized the subdued woman reflecting back.
She called for her driver, instructing him to take her downtown to the corporate headquarters of Sterling Enterprises.
The ride felt agonizingly long, every red light amplifying the deep knot of anxiety in her stomach.
When the car finally pulled up to the sleek, glass-fronted skyscraper, Chloe hesitated.
She took a deep, shaky breath and stepped out onto the busy pavement.
The lobby was an intimidating expanse of polished steel and cold, white marble.
She walked straight to the massive reception desk, her hands trembling slightly at her sides.
"Excuse me."
Chloe said quietly to the stern-looking receptionist.
"I am here to see Mrs. Eleanor Sterling."
The receptionist did not look up from her glowing dual monitors.
"Do you have a scheduled appointment?"
"No."
Chloe admitted, her voice dropping to a near whisper.
"But my name is Chloe, and it is a matter of absolute urgency."
The receptionist finally looked up, her eyes narrowing with immediate recognition.
She had clearly read the morning society blogs.
She picked up a sleek black desk phone and pressed a single silver button.
"Ms. Sterling, there is a young woman named Chloe here in the lobby."
The receptionist paused, listening intently to the voice on the other end of the line.
"Understood."
The receptionist placed the phone back on its receiver and looked directly at Chloe.
"Mrs. Sterling will see you now."
"Take the private elevator on the left directly to the top floor."
Chloe nodded mutely, her heart hammering violently against her ribcage.
She walked toward the designated elevator, feeling the heavy weight of her impending judgment.
The ride to the top floor was swift and completely silent.
When the steel doors slid open, she found herself in a stunning, sunlit executive office.
Eleanor Sterling was standing by a massive window, looking out over the sprawling city below.
She was wearing a sharp, charcoal grey suit, looking every bit the formidable billionaire she was.

Chloe stepped out of the elevator, her flat shoes making no sound on the thick, plush carpet.
She was entirely at the mercy of the woman she had so viciously mocked just hours before.
