Chapter 4: The Cold Outside

The cool night air hit Chloe's flushed face the moment she stepped onto the grand portico.

She shivered, though not entirely from the evening chill.

The heavy mahogany doors were shut tight, securely locking her out of the glittering world she so desperately craved.

Valets in crisp uniforms stood near the curb, politely pretending not to notice her tear-stained cheeks.

She fumbled in her designer clutch for her phone, her hands shaking violently.

For the first time in her deeply privileged life, her money and perceived status offered absolutely no protection.

Inside the sprawling ballroom, the atmosphere slowly returned to a state of elegant celebration.

Eleanor Sterling calmly returned to her small table near the back of the room.

She picked up her crystal water glass, completely unbothered by the dramatic confrontation that had just occurred.

Sarah, the beautiful bride, walked over with two crystal flutes of premium champagne.

She offered one to the older woman with a hesitant, incredibly grateful smile.

"Thank you for not letting her ruin the entire night."

Sarah said softly, carefully taking a seat opposite the billionaire founder.

Eleanor accepted the glass, her stern features finally softening into a genuinely warm smile.

"People like Chloe are merely a temporary storm, my dear."

"You simply weather them and patiently wait for the sun to return."

"Now, tell me all about your wonderful honeymoon plans."

Meanwhile, Chloe sat alone in the quiet back of her luxury town car.

She stared blankly out the tinted window as the vehicle pulled away from the venue.

The bright city lights blurred into streaks of meaningless color as her heavy tears finally began to fall.

The devastating weight of her own cruelty was finally beginning to truly sink in.
