Chapter 6: The Counterstrike

The following day, the hospital administrator who had drafted the letter against Sofía found himself sitting across from Nicolás Velasco in a windowless boardroom.

"I understand," Nicolás began, his voice dangerously polite, "that you are investigating one of your finest nurses based on the word of a disgruntled former donor."

The administrator sweat profusely. "Señor Velasco, it is just protocol—"

"Protocol," Nicolás interrupted, sliding a legal document across the table. "This is a deed to a new trauma wing. Fully funded, fully staffed, state-of-the-art equipment. It will save thousands of lives."

The administrator stared at the document, his eyes wide.

"However," Nicolás continued, his eyes turning to ice, "if the name Sofía Reyes is ever brought up in a disciplinary meeting again, I will not only burn this deed, but I will make sure your personal financial irregularities—detailed in this second folder—are handed over to federal prosecutors."

The administrator swallowed hard. "The investigation is closed. Immediately."

When Nicolás returned to the mansion, he found Sofía in the garden, playing with Mateo on a thick cotton blanket.

"Your job is secure," Nicolás told her simply. "The hospital will not bother you again."

Sofía looked up, surprised. "You went after them?"

"They threatened someone under my roof," Nicolás said. "No one does that."

Sofía saw the same dangerous protector she had met on her first day, but now, that protection was extended to her. A quiet sense of gratitude settled between them.
