Chapter 8: The Reckoning

Nicolás’s armored SUV tore through the iron gates of the estate, coming to a screeching halt. He and Valeria ran into the mansion, surrounded by loyal security personnel.

They found Sofía in the nursery, holding Mateo tightly to her chest. The rogue guard was pinned to the floor by two of Nicolás’s men, bleeding from his head.

Valeria rushed forward, wrapping her arms around both Sofía and Mateo, crying in sheer relief.

Nicolás looked at the restrained guard, then at the shattered lamp. The realization of how close he had come to losing his son hit him like a physical blow. He walked over to Sofía. His hands were trembling, a stark contrast to his usual iron control.

"You risked your life for him," Nicolás whispered.

"He is my patient," Sofía replied, her voice shaking but her chin held high. "And he is just a boy."

The next morning, the reckoning was absolute. The guard confessed everything. Nicolás used his connections in the criminal underworld and the judicial system to strip Doña Leonor of every hidden asset, passport, and ally she possessed. Facing decades in a federal prison for conspiracy to kidnap, she was forced to flee the country, completely destitute and permanently exiled from Mexico.

The shadow that had hung over the Velasco family was finally gone.
