Chapter 9: Independence

As the six-month mark approached, the dynamic in the mansion shifted. Mateo was a thriving, joyful toddler who had learned to walk and laugh. Valeria had blossomed into a fierce, capable mother who no longer doubted her instincts.

One evening, Valeria asked Nicolás to meet her in the study.

"I am moving out," she announced, sliding a set of architectural plans across his desk. "I bought an estate in Polanco. It’s highly secure, and it has a beautiful garden for Mateo."

Nicolás studied her. Months ago, he would have fought this, demanding his heir remain under his roof. Now, he saw a mother who deserved her own space.

"We will share custody evenly," Valeria continued. "He needs his father. But you and I both know we were only forcing a relationship out of obligation. We are better as allies than as prisoners to our parents' expectations."

Nicolás smiled, a genuine expression of respect. "You have become formidable, Valeria."

Nicolás agreed. It was the most peaceful negotiation of his life.
