Chapter 11 - The Room Behind the Wall.

Adrian refused to crawl into the ventilation space, and Daniel refused to let anyone else do it either.

Instead, the security team opened the service wall from the maintenance side.

Behind the white vent was not a narrow duct as everyone expected.

It was an access cavity large enough for a person to move through carefully.

The mansion had been remodeled so many times that entire spaces had been sealed and forgotten.

At the bottom of the cavity, they found a small canvas bag.

Inside were Adrian’s signet ring, Eleanor’s missing keys, two copied staff badges, and a digital voice recorder.

Daniel played the most recent file.

Caroline’s voice said, “Make sure Adrian finds it.”

Then another voice followed.

A man repeated the sentence more slowly, practicing the timing.

The next file contained Eleanor’s voice.

Then Adrian’s.

Then Emma’s.

All had been recorded from ordinary household conversations.

Noah stood in the doorway until Adrian noticed him.

He immediately sent the boy back with the nanny, but not before Noah saw the recorder.

“Is that the thing that makes pretend voices?” he asked.

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Yes,” Daniel said gently.

“Something like that.”

The discovery cleared Caroline of one suspicion and deepened every other fear.

Peter Vance now seemed likely, but Daniel wanted proof before anyone said his name publicly.

They searched the gardener’s shed again.

Behind a loose board, Daniel found a prepaid storage receipt.

The unit was across town.

By afternoon, they entered it with police present.

There were no weapons and no dramatic hideout.

There were boxes of old Mercer records, copied estate maps, discarded uniforms, and dozens of photographs of the mansion taken from public roads.

Emma’s discomfort grew as she realized some photographs showed her walking Noah to school.

Adrian’s anger became almost impossible to contain.

Daniel kept him focused on the documents.

One folder was labeled E.V.

Inside were copies of Eleanor’s bank statements and letters from Peter asking her for money years earlier.

Another folder was labeled A.M.

It contained Adrian’s public schedules, foundation appearances, and notes about times he would be away from home.

Then they found a folder labeled E.H.

Emma’s initials.

She stared at it.

Inside were employment forms, a copy of her apartment lease, and a photograph of Rose Hale.

On the back of Rose’s photograph, someone had written one sentence.

SHE TOOK WHAT BELONGED TO US.

Emma sat down hard on a storage crate.

“What did my mother take?”

Daniel opened the old check register from Rose’s envelope.

One line had been underlined in red.

A transfer had been reversed fifteen years earlier, preventing almost two million dollars from leaving the foundation.

The reversal was authorized using information Rose had given Adrian’s father.

Eleanor finally understood.

“Charles blamed Rose for stopping the transfer.”

Caroline looked at the storage boxes.

“And Peter learned the story from Charles.”

Daniel nodded.

“Maybe he believes his family was cheated.”

Adrian’s voice turned cold.

“Then why target my son?”

No one answered.

A police officer approached with a sealed plastic sleeve.

He had found a recent photograph behind the storage locker door.

It showed Noah at the mansion garden gate.

Written beneath it were three words.

THE HEIR LISTENS.

Emma stared at the phrase and remembered Noah’s toy stethoscope.

Then she remembered something else.

“The man did not avoid Noah because he was afraid of being seen.”

Adrian looked at her.

May you like

“What do you mean?”

“He wanted Noah to notice him.”
