Chapter 12 - The Choice at Midnight.

By evening, Mercer House felt less like a home than a puzzle built around Noah.
Adrian wanted to take his son to a hotel under security until Peter was found.
Daniel advised a private residence instead.
Caroline wanted Noah moved immediately.
Eleanor said nothing because every new discovery involving her son seemed to age her another year.
Emma listened until Adrian asked what she thought.
She chose her words carefully.
“If Peter wants Noah to notice things, then moving him without understanding why may give Peter another chance somewhere less controlled.”
Caroline bristled.
“You are suggesting a child remain in a house someone has entered repeatedly?”
“I am suggesting we stop reacting to the path he draws for us.”
Adrian looked at Emma.
“What path?”
“The tag in Noah’s room led us to Rose.”
“The fake voice led us to Caroline.”
“The ring led us to the vent.”
“The storage receipt led us to the photographs.”
She looked around the table.
“Every clue is placed where we will find it.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“He is not hiding the investigation from us.”
“He is directing it,” Emma said.
Eleanor finally spoke.
“Peter always wanted to prove he was smarter than the people who dismissed him.”
Adrian sat back.
“Then what does he want us to discover?”
Eleanor’s answer came after a long silence.
“Something about Charles.”
They returned to the hidden records room and searched the ledgers again.
Near midnight, Emma found a number repeated in the margins beside several old entries.
317.
The same number as the brass tag.
Daniel compared it with the old St. Vincent’s records Rose had kept.
Room 317 had not only been Rose’s staff room during a temporary assignment there.
It was also the number of a safe-deposit file Charles used for foundation documents during a hospital stay.
The tag was not pointing to Rose.
It was pointing through Rose to Charles.
Daniel contacted the law firm that had handled the Mercer estate fifteen years earlier.
A retired clerk remembered a sealed archive box identified as 317.
It had never been collected after Charles left the country.
The box was still in off-site storage.
Adrian wanted it delivered immediately.
The law firm refused without written authorization.
Caroline, as foundation chair, signed the request.
At 12:42 a.m., a courier arrived at Mercer House with a dusty archival carton.
Inside were canceled checks, letters, and one small cassette recorder.
Daniel found an old player in the storage room.
The recording began with Charles Mercer’s voice.
He sounded angry and exhausted.
He described a plan to move foundation money into private companies because he believed the Mercer family had denied him what he deserved.
Then another voice entered the recording.
A much younger Peter Vance.
Peter sounded nervous.
“I don’t want to do this anymore.”
Charles laughed at him.
“You already did enough.”
The tape ended with Peter asking what would happen if Rose told Eleanor.
Charles answered with a sentence that made Eleanor close her eyes.
“Then we make Rose look confused, and no one listens.”
Emma’s hands trembled.
The cruelty was not physical.
It was quieter and, to her, almost worse.
Her mother had carried the weight of being doubted for years.
Adrian reached for the next document in the box.
It was a recent photocopy, not an original.
Someone had placed it there within the last year.
At the bottom was Peter’s handwriting.
I WAS NINETEEN.
HE MADE ME HELP.
NOW I WILL MAKE THEM HEAR IT.
Daniel looked up.
“This was never only about money.”
A phone rang in the silent room.
It was the mansion’s private line.
Adrian answered.
A man’s voice said one sentence.
May you like
“Ask my mother what she chose.”
Then the call ended.
