Chapter 9 - The Name in the Ledger.

The hidden passage ended beneath the west wing in a storage room that did not appear on any modern blueprint.
Metal shelves lined the walls.
Most were empty.
At the far end stood an old gray cabinet with a broken lock.
Adrian recognized his father’s handwriting on faded labels.
FOUNDATION - PRIVATE.
Daniel opened the first drawer.
Inside were ledgers from the years before the foundation converted to digital records.
Emma stood very still.
“My mother was right here.”
Eleanor nodded slowly.
“Rose found this room by accident.”
Adrian looked at her.
“And my father knew?”
“He found out after she told him.”
“Then why hide it?”
Eleanor’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because he believed the person taking money was a member of the family.”
Daniel began comparing the old ledgers with the copied invoices in his briefcase.
One name appeared repeatedly beside transfers to maintenance vendors.
C. Mercer.
Adrian’s stomach tightened.
“Caroline.”
Daniel did not answer immediately.
He kept turning pages.
Then he found a handwritten note clipped behind the ledger.
C.M. DOES NOT MEAN CAROLINE.
Adrian stared at the initials.
“Then who?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Charles Mercer.”
Adrian’s uncle.
Charles had been his father’s younger brother and the foundation’s treasurer fifteen years ago.
He had died seven years earlier after moving overseas.
Emma leaned against a shelf.
“So my mother saw Charles moving files?”
“Yes,” Eleanor said.
“She told your father, and he began investigating.”
“Why did she leave?”
“Because Charles learned she had seen him.”
Emma’s face tightened.
“What did he do?”
Eleanor answered carefully.
“He threatened her job and reputation, and your father decided the safest choice was to move her away from the estate with a generous settlement.”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“She spent the rest of her life thinking she had been pushed aside for telling the truth.”
Eleanor looked ashamed.
“Your father thought he was protecting her.”
“People with power always seem to call silence protection.”
Adrian flinched because the sentence applied to him too.
Daniel continued searching.
Charles was dead, but the fake vendor scheme had resumed only eight months earlier.
Someone was copying his old method.
The question was who.
Adrian turned back to the nursery recording.
“Caroline knew about our uncle’s history.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.
Your father told only me and Rose.”
The room went silent.
Daniel slowly looked toward the wall message.
ROSE WAS RIGHT.
“If Caroline did not know,” he said, “then the voice on the recording may have been planted for us to hear.”
Adrian frowned.
“A recording can be edited.”
“Or played through a phone outside the room.”
Emma remembered the gray-coated man pausing in the doorway.
“He was waiting for the voice.”
Daniel nodded.
“Someone wanted Adrian to suspect Caroline.”
A vibration came from Daniel’s phone.
It was a message from the security team upstairs.
Caroline had just arrived at the front gate.
She was angry, frightened, and demanding to see Adrian immediately.

The message included one more detail.
She was holding an envelope addressed in Rose Hale’s handwriting.
