Chapter 1: The Truth Beneath the Silence

Carol’s hands trembled as she reached for Sophie’s shoulder.

“Sophie? Can you hear me?”

No response.

Her heart slammed violently against her ribs as panic replaced every ounce of anger. She yanked the blanket back—and froze.

More blood.

Far more than she had expected.

“Oh my God…”

Carol stumbled backward before rushing to grab her phone, her fingers barely cooperating.

“911! Please—she’s not waking up, she’s bleeding—please hurry!”

Minutes stretched into eternity.

Carol knelt beside the bed again, brushing Sophie’s damp hair away from her pale face. Up close, she could see faint tear tracks on her cheeks—as if Sophie had cried herself into unconsciousness.

“What happened to you, child…?” she whispered, her voice breaking.

Sirens finally pierced the quiet.

Paramedics rushed in, taking control of the room with urgent precision. Questions were thrown at Carol, but she barely processed them.

All she could think about was how wrong she had been.

How blind.

How cruel.

As Sophie was lifted onto the stretcher, her hand weakly shifted—barely noticeable.

But Carol saw it.

And it shattered her.
