Chapter 3: A New Beginning

Three days later, Sophie finally opened her eyes.
The room was quiet, soft light filtering through the window.
And Carol was there.
Sitting beside her bed.
Waiting.
The moment Sophie stirred, Carol leaned forward, her voice trembling.
“Sophie… sweetheart?”
Sophie blinked slowly, confused.
“W-what happened…?”
Carol took her hand gently, as if afraid she might break.
“You scared us,” she whispered. “You should have told us… you didn’t have to go through it alone.”
Tears welled in Sophie’s eyes.
“I didn’t want to ruin anything… the wedding… your expectations…”
Carol shook her head immediately, tears falling again.
“No. No more of that. I was wrong.” Her voice cracked. “I judged you before I knew you. I hurt you when you needed kindness.”
Sophie looked at her, surprised.
Carol squeezed her hand.
“You’re not just my son’s wife,” she said softly. “You’re my family.”
Daniel stepped into the room then, relief washing over his face as he saw Sophie awake.
He moved quickly to her side, kissing her forehead.
“You’re staying,” he said firmly. “We’ll get you the care you need. No more hiding.”
Sophie let out a small, fragile smile.
For the first time since arriving in that house… she felt safe.
Weeks later, the Bennett home felt different.
Warmer.
Softer.
Carol knocked before entering Sophie’s room now—always carrying tea, always checking in.
Not out of obligation.
But love.

And every morning, when sunlight filled the room, it no longer revealed judgment—
Only a second chance.
