Chapter 2: Pieces of a Hidden Pain

The hospital waiting room smelled like antiseptic and regret.
Carol sat rigidly, replaying every harsh word she had ever thought about Sophie.
Lazy.
Spoiled.
Disrespectful.
The words now felt like knives.
Her son, Daniel, burst through the doors nearly an hour later, his face pale with fear.
“Mom—what happened?!”
Carol stood, her voice trembling. “I… I thought she was sleeping. I yelled at her… Daniel, I didn’t know…”
Daniel ran a hand through his hair, pacing. “She told me she wasn’t feeling well last night, but she insisted it was just exhaustion…”
A doctor approached.
Both of them froze.
“She’s stable,” the doctor said. “But she lost a significant amount of blood. She should have come in much earlier.”
Carol swallowed hard. “What caused it?”
The doctor hesitated.
“She was hiding a medical condition. A severe one.”
Daniel’s eyes widened. “Hiding? Why would she hide something like that?”
The doctor looked between them.
“Because she didn’t want to be a burden.”
Silence crushed the space between mother and son.
Carol sank into her chair, tears spilling freely now.
All this time…
Sophie wasn’t lazy.

She was suffering.
Alone.
