Chapter 1: The Breaking Point

The kitchen fell into a suffocating silence the moment he walked in.
Alexander Vaughn—the billionaire owner of the estate—was not a man who visited the servant quarters. Not ever.
Yet there he stood.
Tall. Imposing. Dressed in a charcoal suit worth more than most people’s yearly salary. His sharp gaze swept across the room… and then stopped.
On her.
The young maid sat on the cold marble floor, clutching a chipped plate with scraps barely fit for a stray animal. Her hands trembled. Her eyes, red from crying, widened in fear as she tried to scramble up.
“I—I’m sorry, sir—”
“Don’t.”
His voice was low. Controlled. Dangerous.
Alexander stepped forward, his polished shoes echoing like thunder. His eyes flicked to the plate. Then to the empty counters. Then to the house manager standing frozen near the doorway.
“Explain this.”
The manager, Mr. Grayson, forced a tight smile. “Just discipline, sir. The girl has been… inefficient. I docked her pay. She needs to learn—”
“By starving her?”
The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
“No, sir, I—”
Alexander removed his suit jacket without breaking eye contact and draped it gently over the girl’s shoulders. The gesture was so unexpected, so protective, that her breath caught in her throat.
“What’s your name?” he asked her, softer now.
“…Lily,” she whispered.
He nodded once. Then turned back to Grayson.
“You will restore every cent you stole from her wages,” Alexander said calmly. “And you will do it tonight.”
Grayson scoffed, trying to regain control. “Sir, with all due respect, you don’t understand how things are run here. These workers—”
“I understand perfectly.”
Alexander took one more step forward.
“And you’re done.”
Grayson blinked. “Excuse me?”
“You’re fired.”
The word hit like a gunshot.
“You can’t be serious—over a maid?” Grayson snapped, his composure cracking. “I’ve run this house for ten years!”
“And abused my staff for just as long,” Alexander replied coldly. “Pack your things. Security will escort you out.”
For the first time, real fear appeared in Grayson’s eyes.
“You’ll regret this,” he hissed.

Alexander didn’t even flinch.
“No,” he said quietly. “You will.”
