CHAPTER 1: THE INTRUDER The stranger didn’t run.

The stranger didn’t run.

That was the first thing Laura noticed.

Instead, he lifted both hands slowly, almost calmly, as if he had been expecting this moment.

“Don’t scream,” he said, his voice low but steady behind the mask. “You’ll wake the baby.”

Laura’s heart pounded so violently she thought she might collapse. Her phone was already pressed to her ear.

“911, what is your emergency?”

“There’s someone in my house,” she whispered urgently. “In my baby’s room—please, hurry!”

Behind her, Ethan stood frozen, but his eyes never left the man.

The intruder took one slow step back from the crib.

“I’m not here to hurt her,” he said.

“Then why are you here?” Laura snapped, her voice trembling but fierce. “Step away from my daughter!”

The man hesitated.

Then, to Laura’s shock, he reached down and gently adjusted something clipped to the side of the crib—a small, unfamiliar device connected near the baby monitor.

Ethan suddenly spoke.

“I knew it,” he whispered.

Laura glanced at him. “Knew what?”

But before Ethan could answer, the distant sound of sirens cut through the night.

The intruder stiffened.

“They’re too early…” he muttered.

In one swift motion, he pulled something from his pocket—not a weapon, but a small card—and placed it on the dresser.

Then he turned toward the window.

“Wait!” Ethan shouted. “Don’t leave yet!”

The man paused for just a fraction of a second… then disappeared into the darkness.

Seconds later, Emma began to cry.
