CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH UNFOLDS

Police flooded the house within minutes.

Officers searched every room, every corner, every inch of the backyard. But the intruder was gone.

Laura held Emma tightly in her arms, shaking.

Ethan stood nearby, unusually quiet, his gaze fixed on the small device still attached to the crib.

An officer approached.

“Ma’am, did you recognize the individual?”

“No,” Laura said. “But he said he wasn’t here to hurt her.”

The officer nodded, unconvinced.

“Ma’am, we’ll need to take that device for analysis.”

Before they could remove it, Ethan stepped forward.

“Wait,” he said. “That’s not his.”

Everyone looked at him.

“What do you mean?” Laura asked.

Ethan swallowed hard.

“I saw it two days ago,” he said. “When you were in the shower.”

Laura’s stomach dropped.

“You saw someone come in?”

“No,” Ethan said. “That’s the thing… no one came in. But the monitor glitched. And then that thing was just… there.”

The room fell silent.

“I didn’t tell you,” Ethan continued, his voice cracking, “because I thought maybe I was imagining it. But then… I started hearing sounds at night. Not like footsteps… more like… clicking. Like something was turning on and off.”

The officer carefully removed the device.

“Kid,” he said gently, “you did the right thing by speaking up.”

Later that morning, the police returned with preliminary findings.

The device wasn’t a camera.

It wasn’t a bug.

It was something far more disturbing.

“It’s a frequency jammer,” the lead detective explained. “Designed to interfere with wireless signals—baby monitors, alarms, even Wi-Fi.”

Laura felt cold all over.

“Why would someone jam our signals?”

The detective’s expression hardened.

“To make sure no one could see or hear what happens next.”

Ethan’s face went pale.

“But…” Laura stammered, “the man tonight—he fixed it.”

“Yes,” the detective said. “Which means one thing.”

He looked directly at her.

“He wasn’t the threat.”
