CHAPTER 3: WHAT ETHAN SAW

That night, Laura didn’t sleep.
Neither did Ethan.
They sat together in the living room, lights on, waiting.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” Laura asked softly.
Ethan stared at his hands.
“Because… I saw something else.”
Laura’s chest tightened. “What?”
Ethan looked up, his eyes filled with fear.
“I saw someone watching the house.”
A chill ran down her spine.
“When?”
“Every night,” he said. “Across the street. Same car. Same spot.”
Laura stood up immediately and walked to the window.
The street was quiet.
Empty.
But as she stared into the darkness, something deep in her gut told her Ethan wasn’t wrong.
Suddenly—
A car engine started.
Both of them turned toward the sound.
A dark sedan, parked under a broken streetlight, slowly pulled away.
Ethan’s voice trembled.
“That’s it.”
Laura didn’t hesitate this time.
She grabbed her phone again.
Three days later, the police made an arrest.
The man in the car wasn’t a random stranger.
He was someone far more terrifying.
A technician.
One who had installed their home security system just weeks earlier.
Authorities discovered he had planted the jammer himself—planning to disable the house’s defenses before breaking in.
But something had gone wrong.
The first intruder—the masked man—was not part of that plan.
He was a private investigator.
Hired anonymously.
To check on unusual activity in the neighborhood.
He had traced the signal interference back to Laura’s house and broken in to remove the device before anything could happen.
He had been too late to explain.
But not too late to stop it.
EPILOGUE
A week later, the house felt quiet again.
Peaceful.
Normal.
Emma slept soundly in her crib.
Laura stood in the doorway, watching her, her heart finally steady.
Behind her, Ethan leaned against the wall.
“You saved her,” Laura said softly.
Ethan shook his head.
“No,” he replied. “I just… didn’t ignore it.”
Laura turned and pulled him into a tight hug.
And for the first time since that night, Ethan smiled.
Outside, the streetlight flickered.

But this time—
There was no one watching.
