The charges came quickly.
Child abuse. Emotional cruelty. Coercion.
Cassandra Vale—once admired, envied, untouchable—was led away in handcuffs before the week was over.
But Marcus didn’t celebrate.
Because healing Lily mattered more than revenge.
The first night after everything, she stood quietly in her bedroom doorway, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit.
“Daddy?” she whispered.
Marcus immediately knelt in front of her. “I’m here.”
She hesitated. “Am I… in trouble?”
The question broke him.
“No,” he said firmly, pulling her into his arms. “You will never be in trouble for telling the truth. Ever.”
For the first time in months, Lily held onto him without fear.
Weeks turned into months.
The house changed.
The cameras were gone.
The silence was softer.
And slowly, Lily began to laugh again.
One afternoon, Marcus found her at the kitchen table, drawing with bright colors—sunshine, flowers, a little girl holding her father’s hand.
“No more dark pictures?” he asked gently.
She shook her head with a small smile. “The monsters are gone.”
Marcus swallowed hard, then smiled back.
“Yeah,” he said. “They are.”
And this time, he made himself a promise—
