CHAPTER 1: THE SILENCE BREAKS

The room held its breath.

The man stepped forward slowly, each footstep echoing like a warning. His eyes never left the girl.

“My… daughter,” he said, his voice low, almost unrecognizable.

She flinched.

That alone shattered something inside him.

He dropped to one knee in front of her, his expensive suit brushing against the marble floor she had been forced to clean.

“Who did this to you?” he asked softly.

Her lips trembled. She glanced toward the woman on the sofa, then quickly looked down again.

That was enough.

The father stood.

When he turned, the warmth in his eyes was gone.

“What,” he said, his voice now sharp and controlled, “exactly has been happening in my house?”

The stepmother forced a laugh. “You’re overreacting. She’s just being disciplined—”

“Disciplined?” he cut in.

The word hit the room like thunder.

He took another step closer. “She is a child. My child.”

The glass in her hand trembled harder now.

“She’s been lying,” the woman insisted. “She refuses to listen, she breaks rules, she—”

“Stop.”

One word.

Final.

The staff standing at the edges of the room lowered their heads. No one dared speak.

“Call the doctor,” he ordered without looking away from her. “And have security review every camera in this house. Every room. Every hallway.”

The stepmother’s face went pale.

“You don’t need to do that,” she said quickly.

But it was already too late.

Because for the first time—

He wasn’t asking.
