CHAPTER 2: A FIGHT FOR LIFE… AND FOR FORGIVENESS

Inside the emergency room, everything moved fast.

Machines beeped. Nurses worked urgently. The little girl lay unconscious, her small body trembling with fever.

Michael stepped in, instantly switching into doctor mode—but his heart was anything but steady.

“What’s her temperature?”

“104.7 and rising.”

“Possible severe infection,” he said quickly. “Start IV antibiotics. Now.”

As he worked, he couldn’t stop looking at her face.

Her eyes… even closed… looked so familiar.

His daughter.

“I’m here,” he whispered under his breath, as if she could hear him. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Hours passed like seconds.

Finally, the fever began to drop.

The tension in the room slowly eased.

One of the nurses smiled faintly. “She’s stabilizing, doctor.”

Michael closed his eyes briefly, overwhelmed with relief.

Outside, his father sat alone, his hands clasped tightly as he prayed.

When Michael stepped out, their eyes met.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Michael walked forward and pulled his father into a tight embrace.

“I should’ve been there,” he said, his voice heavy with regret. “For you… for her… for Emily.”

“You didn’t know,” the old man replied softly. “And now… you’re here. That’s what matters.”

Michael nodded, though the guilt still weighed heavily inside him.

“From now on,” he said firmly, “I’m not leaving her again.”
