Chapter 1: The Mark of the Past

The chapel had gone completely silent.
Even the soft rustle of silk gowns and the distant hum of the organ seemed to fade into nothing as Victoria Ashfordâs trembling hand held the bracelet inches from Emmaâs exposed shoulder.
The gold star charm hovered beside the scar.
Perfectly aligned.
Emmaâs breath caught in her throat. âWhat⊠what is this?â she whispered, her voice unsteady, barely audible.
Victoria didnât answer at first. Her lips parted, but no words came. Her eyesâonce sharp and commandingâwere now glassy, unfocused, searching Emmaâs face as if trying to reconcile two different realities.
âThat scarâŠâ Victoria finally said, her voice fragile, almost unfamiliar. âYou were barely three years old.â
Emma froze.
Adrian stepped forward. âMother, what are you talking about?â His tone had lost its anger, replaced by confusion.
Victoriaâs gaze flicked briefly toward him, then back to Emma. âThere was an accident. A fire at a summer estate. A little girl was pulled from the flames, but in the chaosâŠâ Her voice broke. âShe disappeared.â
Emma shook her head slowly. âNo⊠IâI grew up in foster care. Iâve had this scar as long as I can remember, butââ
Victoria took a shaky step closer. âShe wore this bracelet. It was custom-made. There is no other like it.â Her fingers tightened around the delicate chain. âWe searched for years.â
The room seemed to tilt beneath Emmaâs feet.

âYou think IâmâŠ?â she whispered.
Victoriaâs composure shattered completely. âI think,â she said, tears finally spilling over, âyou might be my daughter.â
