Chapter 2: Fractures and Truths

The revelation fractured the wedding like a dropped glass.

Guests whispered in stunned disbelief. Some stood, unsure whether to stay or quietly leave. But at the altar, the world had narrowed to just three people—Emma, Victoria, and Adrian.

“No,” Adrian said, shaking his head, pacing once before stopping. “This doesn’t make sense. Emma, you told me—your records—”

“They were incomplete,” Emma said faintly, her mind racing. “I never knew my real family.”

Victoria reached into her purse again, pulling out a folded, aged photograph. Her hands trembled as she unfolded it and held it out.

It showed a younger Victoria, standing beside a smiling man
and a small girl with soft curls and bright eyes. Around the child’s wrist—

A tiny silver bracelet with a gold star.

Emma stared at it, her vision blurring. Something deep inside her stirred—a flicker of memory. Heat. Smoke. A woman screaming her name—

“Emma?” Adrian’s voice softened, stepping closer to her. “What are you feeling?”

“I
I don’t know,” she said, clutching her head briefly. “It’s like something is trying to come back.”

Victoria’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Your name wasn’t always Emma Vale.”

Emma looked up slowly.

“It was Eleanor Ashford.”

The name echoed in her chest like a distant bell.

For a moment, no one moved.

Then Adrian exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. “So
what are you saying?” He looked between them. “That the woman I’m about to marry
 is your long-lost daughter?”

Victoria nodded weakly. “I don’t want to believe it unless it’s true. But everything
 everything points to her.”

Emma took a step back, overwhelmed. “This is too much. I can’t just become someone else because of a bracelet and a scar.”

“You’re not becoming someone else,” Adrian said gently. “You’re finding out who you’ve always been.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears—not dramatic, but quiet, restrained. “And what does that make us?” she asked, looking at him.

The question hung in the air.
