Chapter 3: A New Beginning

Hours later, the chapel was nearly empty.

The grand wedding had dissolved into something far more intimate—and far more real.

Emma sat alone in a quiet side room, still in her torn gown. The lace at her shoulder had been gently draped back into place, but the scar remained visible.

She stared at the bracelet in her hand.

Victoria had given it to her without hesitation.

A soft knock came at the door.

“Come in,” Emma said quietly.

Adrian stepped inside, his tuxedo slightly undone, his expression calm but thoughtful. He closed the door behind him and leaned against it for a moment before speaking.

“DNA test is already being arranged,” he said. “Fast-tracked.”

Emma nodded faintly. “Of course it is.”

A small silence settled between them.

Then Adrian walked closer, stopping just in front of her. “Hey,” he said softly. “Look at me.”

She did.

“No matter what the test says,” he continued, “you are still you. The woman I fell in love with. That doesn’t change.”

Emma searched his face. “But if it’s true
”

He gave a small, almost amused exhale. “Then I guess I accidentally fell in love with someone even more complicated than I thought.”

A faint smile tugged at her lips.

For the first time since everything happened, she looked lighter.

“I don’t know how to process all of this,” she admitted.

“You don’t have to,” he said. “Not today.”

Another pause.

Then, from the doorway, a quiet voice spoke.

“May I come in?”

Victoria stood there—no longer the imposing figure from before. She looked smaller somehow. Softer.

Emma hesitated, then nodded.

Victoria stepped in slowly, her eyes fixed on Emma—not with judgment, but with something deeper. Hope. Fear.

“I won’t push you,” Victoria said gently. “Whether you are my daughter or not
 I owe you an apology.”

Emma blinked, surprised.

“I judged you. Hurt you. Humiliated you,” Victoria continued, her voice steady but emotional. “And I was wrong.”

Emma swallowed.

Victoria took another step forward. “If you are Eleanor
then I lost you once. I won’t lose you again by forcing anything.”

The sincerity in her voice was undeniable.

Emma stood up slowly.

“I don’t know if I’m ready to call you ‘mother,’” she said honestly.

Victoria nodded. “I understand.”

“But
” Emma looked down at the bracelet, then back at her. “I’m willing to find out the truth.”

Victoria’s eyes welled again—but this time, she didn’t let the tears fall.

“That’s enough,” she whispered.

Adrian stepped beside Emma, gently taking her hand.

“About the wedding
” he said carefully.

Emma glanced at him, then at the empty chapel beyond the window.

She exhaled.

“Let’s not rush it,” she said.

Adrian smiled slightly. “Good. I’d rather marry you when the world isn’t falling apart.”

A soft laugh escaped her.

And for the first time, the tension truly broke.

Outside, the late afternoon light poured through the stained glass, casting warm colors across the room.

Not an ending.

May you like

But something better.

A beginning.
