Chapter 1: The Name She Never Knew

The room held its breath long after Maraâs words faded.
âI⊠I always thought it belonged to my mother.â
Ezra didnât move. His eyes remained locked on the tarnished locket, as if it might vanish if he blinked. The faint tremor in his hands betrayed everything his face tried to conceal.
Celeste stepped forward, her voice measured, almost too controlled. âThatâs impossible.â
Mara looked between them, confusion tightening her chest. âWhy are you all looking at me like that?â
Daniel shifted uneasily, glancing at Ezra. âEzra⊠say something.â
Ezra finally inhaled, sharply, like a man dragged back from underwater. âThat pendant,â he said slowly, âwas buried with my daughter.â
Silence crashed down.
Maraâs fingers instinctively tightened around the locket. âNo⊠that canât be right.â
Celesteâs gaze sharpened. âWhere did you get it?â
âI told you,â Mara said, her voice shaking now. âMy mother gave it to me. Before she died.â
Ezraâs expression flickeredâshock, disbelief, and something far more fragile. Hope.
âWhat was her name?â he asked.
Mara hesitated. âElena.â
The name hit Ezra like a physical blow. He staggered back a step, gripping the edge of a table.
Daniel frowned. âEzra⊠Elena wasââ
âMy wife,â Ezra finished hoarsely.
The air changed.
Maraâs world tilted. âThatâs not possible. My mother never said anything aboutâabout you.â
âShe wouldnât,â Celeste murmured. âNot after what happened.â
Mara looked at her. âWhat happened?â
But no one answered immediately.
Instead, Ezra stepped closer, his voice breaking for the first time. âMy daughter died twenty years ago,â he said. âOr⊠thatâs what I was told.â
May you like
Maraâs breath caught.
âAnd her name,â Ezra whispered, âwas Liora.â
