Chapter 2: Fractures of Truth

Mara shook her head, backing away as if distance could undo the moment. “No
no, you’re wrong. I’m Mara. That’s who I’ve always been.”

“Names can be changed,” Celeste said quietly.

Mara turned on her. “Why are you so calm about this?”

Celeste didn’t answer right away. For the first time, a crack appeared in her composure. “Because I’ve been waiting for it.”

Daniel looked at her sharply. “Waiting? You knew something?”

Celeste’s eyes flicked to Ezra. “We both suspected. But suspicion is not truth.”

Ezra ran a hand through his gray hair, pacing now. “The night Liora ‘died’
there was a fire. Chaos. I never saw her body myself.” He stopped, turning back to Mara. “Only what they told me.”

Mara’s heart pounded. “Who told you?”

Celeste stepped in. “The same people who helped Elena disappear.”

The room froze.

“Elena didn’t die when you thought,” Celeste continued. “She ran. Took the child with her.”

“Why?” Mara asked, her voice barely audible.

Ezra’s jaw tightened. “Because of me.”

The admission hung heavy.

“I was
not a good man back then,” he said. “Power, control—I thought I was protecting my family, but I was suffocating them.”

Mara swallowed hard. “So she left
 and just erased everything?”

“She tried to,” Celeste said. “New names. New life. But she kept one thing.”

Mara looked down at the pendant in her hand.

“A piece of truth she couldn’t let go of.”

Tears welled in Mara’s eyes. “Why wouldn’t she tell me?”

Ezra’s voice softened. “Maybe she was afraid. Or maybe
she wanted you to choose who you became without the weight of who you were.”

Daniel exhaled slowly. “So what now?”

No one answered.

Because the question wasn’t just about the past anymore.

It was about whether Mara—Liora—would accept it.
