Chapter 1: The Name She Never Knew

The room held its breath long after Mara’s words faded.

“I
I always thought it belonged to my mother.”

Ezra didn’t move. His eyes remained locked on the tarnished locket, as if it might vanish if he blinked. The faint tremor in his hands betrayed everything his face tried to conceal.

Celeste stepped forward, her voice measured, almost too controlled. “That’s impossible.”

Mara looked between them, confusion tightening her chest. “Why are you all looking at me like that?”

Daniel shifted uneasily, glancing at Ezra. “Ezra
 say something.”

Ezra finally inhaled, sharply, like a man dragged back from underwater. “That pendant,” he said slowly, “was buried with my daughter.”

Silence crashed down.

Mara’s fingers instinctively tightened around the locket. “No
 that can’t be right.”

Celeste’s gaze sharpened. “Where did you get it?”

“I told you,” Mara said, her voice shaking now. “My mother gave it to me. Before she died.”

Ezra’s expression flickered—shock, disbelief, and something far more fragile. Hope.

“What was her name?” he asked.

Mara hesitated. “Elena.”

The name hit Ezra like a physical blow. He staggered back a step, gripping the edge of a table.

Daniel frowned. “Ezra
 Elena was—”

“My wife,” Ezra finished hoarsely.

The air changed.

Mara’s world tilted. “That’s not possible. My mother never said anything about—about you.”

“She wouldn’t,” Celeste murmured. “Not after what happened.”

Mara looked at her. “What happened?”

But no one answered immediately.

Instead, Ezra stepped closer, his voice breaking for the first time. “My daughter died twenty years ago,” he said. “Or
 that’s what I was told.”

Mara’s breath caught.

“And her name,” Ezra whispered, “was Liora.”
