CHAPTER 1 â âThe Silence After the Wordsâ

The ballroom didnât move for a full three seconds after his words landed.
âShe is my daughter now.â
The music didnât stopâbut it felt distant, like it was underwater.
The little girl, still trembling in his arms, clutched the edge of his tuxedo jacket. Her small fingers curled tightly as if afraid reality might vanish if she loosened her grip even slightly.
The billionaire didnât look at the guests. He only looked at her.
The woman in the black gown finally stepped forward, her voice breaking its composure.
âYou donât understandâsheâs justââ
He raised a single hand.
Not aggressive. Not loud.
Just final.
And that was enough.
âEnough,â he said quietly. âYou will not speak to her again.â
A silence spread across the table like glass cracking invisibly through the room.
The girl blinked up at him, confused.
âAre you⊠taking me away?â
His expression softened for the first time.
âYes,â he said. âSomewhere you never have to ask if youâre allowed to eat.â
May you like
Her eyes widenedânot with fear this time, but something she hadnât practiced yet.
Hope.
