CHAPTER 1 — “The Silence After the Words”

The ballroom didn’t move for a full three seconds after his words landed.

“She is my daughter now.”

The music didn’t stop—but it felt distant, like it was underwater.

The little girl, still trembling in his arms, clutched the edge of his tuxedo jacket. Her small fingers curled tightly as if afraid reality might vanish if she loosened her grip even slightly.

The billionaire didn’t look at the guests. He only looked at her.

The woman in the black gown finally stepped forward, her voice breaking its composure.

“You don’t understand—she’s just—”

He raised a single hand.

Not aggressive. Not loud.

Just final.

And that was enough.

“Enough,” he said quietly. “You will not speak to her again.”

A silence spread across the table like glass cracking invisibly through the room.

The girl blinked up at him, confused.

“Are you
 taking me away?”

His expression softened for the first time.

“Yes,” he said. “Somewhere you never have to ask if you’re allowed to eat.”

May you like

Her eyes widened—not with fear this time, but something she hadn’t practiced yet.

Hope.
