CHAPTER 1 — “The Proof in the Light”

The ballroom remains frozen after the phone screen is revealed.

The groom doesn’t move at first. His breath slows, as if his body is trying to reject what his eyes just saw. The bride stands motionless beside him, her face tight—too tight—like a mask slipping under pressure.

The maid trembles, still holding the phone out, tears running silently down her cheeks.

A few guests begin to whisper. Chairs shift. Someone drops a glass in the distance.

The groom finally takes one step forward.

Not toward the bride.

Toward the maid.

“Play it again,” he says quietly.

The maid hesitates, then taps the screen.

The video replays: the bride, alone in the preparation room, carefully opening a small vial and letting pills dissolve into the same orange juice that was meant for him.

A controlled silence spreads across the room—heavier than noise.

The bride’s voice breaks first.

“It’s not what it looks like
”

But no one believes her tone anymore.

The groom slowly turns his head toward her. His eyes are no longer confused.

May you like

Only stillness.

And realization.
