Chapter 2: The Shadows Follow

Morning at the lake house should have felt like peace.

Instead, Ethan Cole felt watched.

Clara stood at the edge of the wooden dock, her silhouette framed by golden sunrise, but even in that moment of reunion, there was tension in her posture—like she hadn’t fully escaped something, only paused it.

“I didn’t come back because it was safe,” Clara said quietly. “I came back because I ran out of time.”

Lily stayed close to Ethan, gripping his hand tightly, studying Clara like a dream she was afraid might vanish again.

Inside the lake house, Ethan opened the hidden box Clara had guided him to. Files, encrypted drives, and photographs spilled across the table—proof of corporate corruption tied directly to Clara’s family empire: financial laundering, disappearances, and controlled cover-ups stretching across years.

Ethan’s jaw tightened. “They tried to erase you because you knew this.”

Clara nodded. “And they’ll come for all of us now that you’ve opened it.”

That night, headlights appeared across the water.

Three vehicles. No plates. No hesitation.

Ethan immediately shut the curtains. Lily’s breathing grew shallow.

“They found us,” Clara whispered.

But Ethan was already moving. Not as a grieving husband this time—but as someone who had nothing left to lose.

“We leave. Now.”
