Chapter 3: The Crossing Point

They moved through the forest behind the lake house, staying off the road, carrying only what mattered: Lily, the evidence, and each other.
Distant voices echoed through the trees. Flashlights cut through the mist like searching blades.
Ethan carried Lily as Clara led the way, her instincts sharper than memory. Every step felt like a return to the life she had been forced to abandon.
At an abandoned railway tunnel, they stopped.
âThis leads to the old freight line,â Clara said. âFrom there, we can reach the border station.â
Ethan looked at her. âAnd after that?â
Clara hesitated. For the first time, uncertainty crossed her face.
âIf the files go public,â she said, âmy family collapses. Powerful people go down. They wonât stop chasing us.â
Lily looked up. âAre we going to be safe?â
Ethan knelt beside her. âWeâre going to make things right first.â
A distant engine roared.
They ran.
Inside the tunnel, darkness swallowed them, footsteps and echoes merging until it was impossible to tell how close danger truly was. Thenâlight ahead. Freedom or trap.
They burst out into the openâ
âand found a waiting train, engine already running.
A single figure stood beside it, holding a signal light.
An ally.
âClara!â the man shouted. âI told you Iâd keep it ready!â
No time for questions. They boarded.
As the train pulled away, gunfire echoed behind themâbut faded quickly into distance.
For the first time, Lily laughed softly, exhausted relief breaking through fear.

Ethan pulled Clara closer. âWeâre still alive.â
Clara closed her eyes. âNot just alive. Exposed.â
