CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Kindness

The private dining room was nothing like the cold, metallic kitchen Elena had just left behind.

Soft golden light spilled from a crystal chandelier, reflecting off polished mahogany walls. A fire crackled quietly in the corner, filling the space with warmth that felt almost unreal. Elena stood near the doorway, hesitant, clutching Julian’s oversized coat around her like armor.

“Sit,” came a gentle voice.

A middle-aged chef—dressed not in the chaos of a working kitchen but in pristine whites—gestured toward the table. A plate was already set: roasted chicken, fresh bread, butter melting slowly into its surface, and a bowl of rich soup that smelled like comfort itself.

Elena swallowed hard.

“I
I don’t think I’m supposed to be here,” she whispered.

“You are exactly where Mr. Vance wants you to be,” the chef replied firmly. “And tonight, that’s all that matters.”

Her legs trembled as she sat. For a moment, she just stared at the food. Then, as if something inside her finally broke free, she reached for the bread.

The first bite brought tears to her eyes.

Not because of hunger—but because she hadn’t realized how long it had been since she’d been treated like a human being.

Across the estate, Julian stood in his study, staring out over the darkened grounds.

Marcus stepped inside quietly. “She’s eating,” he reported. “Slowly. Carefully.”

Julian nodded once, his jaw tightening.

“And the rest?” he asked.

“The staff is
shaken,” Marcus said. “But word is spreading fast. What you did tonight—it matters.”

Julian turned, his gray eyes cold but thoughtful. “It should never have come to that.”

There was a long pause.

“She’s not just another employee, is she?” Marcus asked carefully.

May you like

Julian didn’t answer right away.

“No,” he said finally. “She’s not.”
