CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Kindness

The private dining room was nothing like the cold, metallic kitchen Elena had just left behind.
Soft golden light spilled from a crystal chandelier, reflecting off polished mahogany walls. A fire crackled quietly in the corner, filling the space with warmth that felt almost unreal. Elena stood near the doorway, hesitant, clutching Julianâs oversized coat around her like armor.
âSit,â came a gentle voice.
A middle-aged chefâdressed not in the chaos of a working kitchen but in pristine whitesâgestured toward the table. A plate was already set: roasted chicken, fresh bread, butter melting slowly into its surface, and a bowl of rich soup that smelled like comfort itself.
Elena swallowed hard.
âI⊠I donât think Iâm supposed to be here,â she whispered.
âYou are exactly where Mr. Vance wants you to be,â the chef replied firmly. âAnd tonight, thatâs all that matters.â
Her legs trembled as she sat. For a moment, she just stared at the food. Then, as if something inside her finally broke free, she reached for the bread.
The first bite brought tears to her eyes.
Not because of hungerâbut because she hadnât realized how long it had been since sheâd been treated like a human being.
Across the estate, Julian stood in his study, staring out over the darkened grounds.
Marcus stepped inside quietly. âSheâs eating,â he reported. âSlowly. Carefully.â
Julian nodded once, his jaw tightening.
âAnd the rest?â he asked.
âThe staff is⊠shaken,â Marcus said. âBut word is spreading fast. What you did tonightâit matters.â
Julian turned, his gray eyes cold but thoughtful. âIt should never have come to that.â
There was a long pause.
âSheâs not just another employee, is she?â Marcus asked carefully.
May you like
Julian didnât answer right away.
âNo,â he said finally. âSheâs not.â
