CHAPTER 1: THE MEMORY IN THE DUST

The arena felt like it had stopped breathing.
The boy stood barely ten feet from the bull now, the faded red bandana stretched between his shaking hands.
“Don’t leave me too, Ranger—”
The words broke off in his throat.
The bull froze.
Its massive chest rose and fell slowly… then slower still.
The crowd didn’t understand what they were seeing. This wasn’t rage anymore. It wasn’t chaos.
It was recognition.
A deep, buried stillness.
The bull stepped forward once.
Then again.
The ground trembled beneath its weight.
The boy didn’t move.
“Dad said you’d remember,” he whispered, tears gathering in his eyes. “He said you never forget kindness.”
A sharp memory flashed—like lightning behind the bull’s eyes.
A man’s voice.
A laugh.
A hand pressing a red bandana into its muzzle years ago in a quiet ranch far away from this violent place.
Ranger exhaled sharply.
May you like
The crowd gasped as the bull lowered its head… not in attack—
But in sorrow.
