Chapter 1: The Capitol Steps

The grand marble staircase of the state courthouse had always been a symbol of justice,

but today, it was a battleground.

Evelyn, a ruthless corporate fixer known for her sharp black suits and even sharper demeanor, clutched her leather briefcase.

Inside were documents that could ruin her entire career,

documents that Corria had sworn to testify about in less than an hour.

Corria, heavily pregnant and wearing a simple navy blue dress,

stood blocking Evelyn’s path near the top of the stairs. She was exhausted but resolute.

"You can't stop this, Evelyn,"

Corria said, her voice trembling but defiant.

"The truth is coming out today."

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed into a cold glare.

Desperation and rage clouded her judgment.

In a split second of unthinkable malice,

Evelyn lunged forward.

She slammed her hands into Corria’s shoulders,

shoving the pregnant woman backward with all her might.
