Chapter 3: The Death Warrant

Arthur looked up from the broken woman in his arms.

At the top of the stairs,

Evelyn stood completely still,

her grip tight on her briefcase.

She looked down at them not with remorse,

but with a cold,

calculating detachment.

Arthur’s sorrow instantly calcified into pure,

unadulterated rage.

He pointed a shaking finger at the woman at the top of the stairs.

"You just signed your own death warrant,"

Arthur snarled, his voice dropping to a deadly,

quiet register that carried up the marble corridor.

For a brief, sickening moment, Evelyn smiled.

It was a smug, self-satisfied smirk.

She believed she had won.

Without Corria to testify, the case would collapse,

and Evelyn would walk away scot-free.

She adjusted her suit jacket,

preparing to turn and walk out the doors behind her.

her triumphant smile vanished.
