The land sat just beyond the curve of the Amalfi coastline—quiet, sunlit, and untouched by the kind of history Mariana had spent her life surviving. Olive trees dotted the hillside. The sea below whispered instead of roared.

It was exactly what she wanted.

Not a fortress.

Not a mansion.

A place that didn’t feel like something to escape from.

She walked the perimeter slowly, her shoes brushing against dry grass. The architect—Luca—kept a respectful distance, allowing her silence to lead.

“This is where the main structure would stand,” he said finally, pointing to a flat stretch overlooking the water. “Natural elevation. Visibility without exposure.”

Mariana nodded. She liked that phrase.

“That’s the entire philosophy,” she replied. “They should feel safe… but never trapped.”

Luca studied her for a moment. “You’ve thought about this deeply.”

“I’ve lived it,” she said simply.

There was no elaboration. None needed.
