Chapter 1: The Silence After the Order

The house didn’t erupt the way anyone expected.
There were no screams. No arguments. No dramatic confrontations.
Just silence.
Ethan Carter stood in the center of the living room, his gaze steady as it moved from one face to another—his mother, his sister, his brother-in-law. The laughter that had filled the room moments ago had vanished, replaced by a tension so thick it felt suffocating.
Behind him, in the kitchen, his wife leaned slightly against the counter. Eight months pregnant. Exhausted. Still holding a damp plate in her trembling hands.
“Put it down,” Ethan said softly, not even turning around.
She hesitated.
Then, slowly, she obeyed.
That small moment—the way she listened, the way she moved carefully like she was afraid to make a mistake—was what finally broke something inside him.
Not anger.
Clarity.
“They threw away your medication?” he asked quietly.
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Ethan closed his eyes for a brief second. When he opened them again, whatever warmth had once lived there was gone.
“Pack your things,” he said to his family. “You have one hour.”
His mother scoffed. “Ethan, don’t be ridiculous. This is our home too—”
“No,” he cut in, voice calm but absolute. “It never was.”

And for the first time that night, they realized—
He wasn’t bluffing.
