Later that night, the house felt different.

Quieter. Softer.

Safer.

Ethan found her sitting on the edge of the bed, staring down at her hands.

“You should have told me,” he said gently.

She shook her head. “They said… it wasn’t a big deal. That I was overreacting.”

His jaw tightened.

“What else?”

She hesitated again. Then finally whispered, “They said I was becoming a burden.”

That word hit harder than anything else.

Burden.

Ethan knelt in front of her, carefully taking her hands in his.

“You are carrying our child,” he said firmly. “You are the reason I breathe every day the way I do.”

Her eyes filled with tears—but she didn’t let them fall.

“I didn’t want to cause problems between you and your family,” she admitted.

He let out a quiet breath.

“They caused it. Not you.”
