Chapter 1: The Breaking Point

The clatter of the pan hitting the sink echoed louder than it should have.

“Enough.”

His voice cut through the house like a blade. The TV noise in the living room dimmed as his family turned their heads, surprised—not by the situation, but by his tone.

His mother frowned. “Why are you raising your voice?”

He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he walked over to his wife and gently took the sponge from her shaking hand. Her fingers were wrinkled, red from hot water, trembling from exhaustion.

“She shouldn’t be doing this,” he said quietly, but each word carried weight.

His aunt scoffed. “She’s the wife of the house. It’s her responsibility.”

He looked up slowly. The calm in his eyes was far more terrifying than anger.

“She is carrying my child,” he replied. “Not your servant.”
