Chapter 1: The Red Light Never Lies

The sirens grew louder.
Closer.
Relentless.
For the first time, the room began to fracture—not from shock, but from fear. Not for Sophie… but for Preston.
His eyes flicked upward.
Just once.
Toward the small black dome above the ballroom entrance.
The blinking red light.
Recording everything.
“You’re bluffing,” Preston snapped, but his voice cracked just enough to betray him.
I didn’t answer.
I just held Sophie tighter as a hotel security manager pushed through the crowd, followed by two uniformed officers.
“What happened here?” one of them demanded.
Before anyone could speak, a voice cut through the silence.
“I have the footage.”
All heads turned.
A tall man in a dark suit stood near the entrance, holding a tablet.
“The Whitmore Hotel records all entrances and main hall activity,” he said calmly. “Including the last twenty minutes.”
Preston stepped back.
“No. That’s not necessary—”
“Oh, I think it is,” the officer replied.
The tablet screen lit up.
