Chapter 3: Silence Has a Cost

The ambulance team rushed in, gently taking Sophie from my arms.

“She’s conscious,” one medic said. “We need to get her to the hospital now.”

“I’m coming with her,” I said immediately.

As they wheeled her out, Sophie reached for me.

“I told the truth, Mommy…”

“I know, baby,” I whispered. “I always knew.”

Behind me, chaos erupted.

Guests whispered.

Phones recorded.

Reputations shattered in real time.

My mother tried to step forward.

“Evelyn, wait—”

I turned.

And for the first time in my life…

I didn’t feel anything for her.

“No,” I said quietly. “You don’t get to speak now.”

My father finally looked at me.

Regret flickered.

Too late.

“You chose him,” I continued. “Every time. Even today.”

Then I walked away.

And this time…

I didn’t look back.
