Chapter 6 - The Man Who Heard Too Much.

Adrian Wells had worked for Ethan for six years.
He knew Ethan's calendar, his travel habits, his investor priorities, his preferred conference rooms, and the names of every person Ethan considered useful.
He also knew when not to be found.
By the time general counsel asked him to come upstairs, Adrian had left the building.
His assistant said he had a dental appointment.
The calendar showed no appointment.
His phone went directly to voicemail.
Ethan denied knowing where he was.
"Adrian manages hundreds of files."
Robert Ames stood inside Ethan's office with Mara and Priya.
"His account received the complete Bennett Meridian trust."
Ethan barely glanced at the printed email.
"Then ask him why."
"We are trying."
"This has nothing to do with me."
Mara watched him.
"Your chief of staff received a confidential shareholder document months before you said you knew Claire Bennett controlled the entity."
Ethan stood.
"I said I did not know she controlled it."
"Did you know her name appeared in the file?"
He paused.
Too long.
Mara's voice became quieter.
"Ethan?"
"I may have heard there was a Bennett connection."
"When?"
"I do not remember."
Mara closed the folder.
"Try."
Across town, Claire was meeting someone else who remembered far more than Ethan wanted.
His name was Luis Moreno.
He had worked at Aurelia for four years and had been the server assigned to Ethan and Vanessa's table the night of the confrontation.
Daniel brought him into Claire's office after the lunch shift.
Luis looked nervous.
"I do not want trouble."
Claire gestured toward the chair.
"Then do not give me anything you did not personally see or hear."
He sat.
"I heard Mr. Cole talking before he came over to your table."
Claire's attention sharpened.
"About me?"
"Yes."
"What did he say?"
Luis looked at Daniel, then back at Claire.
"He told Ms. Hart he was going to make you admit you did not belong there."
Claire felt a familiar irritation, but that was not important.
"Anything else?"
"He said if you were really connected to Bennett Meridian, you would react."
Claire went still.
Daniel leaned forward.
"He knew?"
Luis shook his head.
"I do not know what he knew."
"Only tell us the words you remember."
Luis nodded.
"He said, 'If she is the Bennett, she will not sit there and take it.'"
Claire repeated the sentence silently.
If she is the Bennett.
That meant the confrontation had not been entirely spontaneous.
Ethan had approached the table intending to test a suspicion.
The humiliation had been bait.
Claire's hands became very still on the desk.
"Did Vanessa answer?"
"She asked what he meant."
"And?"
"He said, 'Just watch.'"
Daniel looked furious.
Claire did not.
She looked focused.
"Luis, did anyone ask you about this after that night?"
"A man called the restaurant this morning."
"Name?"
"He said he worked for Mr. Cole's office."
"What did he want?"
"He asked whether staff were discussing private guest conversations."
Claire's eyes narrowed.
"Did he ask you to do anything?"
"No."
"Did he threaten your job?"
"No."
"Did he offer you anything?"
"No."
That mattered.
Claire did not need exaggeration.
The facts were enough.
She thanked Luis and told Daniel to make sure no employee was pressured to comment publicly.
When Luis left, Daniel shut the office door.
"He set you up."
"He tried to provoke me."
"Same difference."
"Not legally."
Daniel gave her a tired look.
"You really can make anything sound like a board memo."
Claire finally smiled.
"It keeps me from throwing coffee."
Her phone rang.
It was Vanessa.
"I need to see you."
"You already did."
"This is different."
Claire checked the time.
"Thirty minutes."
Vanessa arrived in twenty-two.
She looked nothing like the glittering woman who had stood beside Ethan two nights earlier.
Her hair was pulled back.
She wore no engagement ring.
And she carried Ethan's tablet.
Claire stared at it.
"Why do you have that?"
"He left it at my apartment last week."
"Then give it back to him."
"I was going to."
Vanessa placed it on the desk without unlocking it.
"Until he called me this afternoon and asked if I had ever seen a folder named Bennett."
Claire's expression changed.
"What did you say?"
"I said no."
"Was that true?"
Vanessa took a breath.
"No."
She pulled a folded piece of paper from her bag.
It was a handwritten list she had made after seeing Ethan's files months earlier while helping him find a presentation.
Most of the file names meant nothing.
One did.
BENNETT - IDENTITY SCENARIOS.
Claire read it twice.
Vanessa leaned forward.
"He had a file about you before he walked into Aurelia."
Claire looked up.
"How long before?"
May you like
Vanessa swallowed.
"At least four months.
