Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Changed Sides.

Vanessa asked Claire to meet the next morning in a place neither Ethan nor Charles Hart would expect.
She chose a small bakery three blocks from the museum district.
There were no velvet ropes, no private room, and no one at the next table who cared about Cole Meridian.
Claire arrived first.
Vanessa arrived without makeup, without jewelry, and without the composure she had worn like armor at Aurelia.
She sat down and placed her phone face down.
"I ended the engagement."
Claire did not pretend surprise.
"When?"
"Last night."
"How did Ethan take it?"
Vanessa gave a tired laugh.
"He asked whether my father would still support Northstar."
Claire looked at her.
Vanessa's eyes filled with embarrassed anger.
"That was his first question."
"I am sorry."
"Do not be."
Vanessa shook her head.
"I helped create this."
"You did not create Ethan."
"No, but I rewarded him."
She wrapped both hands around her coffee.
"I liked the version of me that existed next to him."
Claire understood more than she wanted to.
Ethan had always been good at making status feel like affection.
Vanessa continued.
"My father is furious."
"At Ethan?"
"At me."
"Why?"
"Because he thinks I am destabilizing an investment over feelings."
Claire's expression cooled.
"That sounds like Charles."
Vanessa looked up.
"You know him better than I thought."
"I know his voting record."
Vanessa almost smiled.
Then she reached into her bag and removed a bound presentation.
"This is the original Hart analysis of Northstar."
Claire opened it.
The first pages matched documents she had already seen.
The final appendix did not.
It showed a downside scenario in which Northstar's largest customer reduced business after the acquisition.
Under that scenario, the deal's expected return dropped sharply.
Claire looked at Vanessa.
"This appendix was not in the board packet."
"I know."
"Where did you get it?"
"My father's home office."
Claire closed the binder.
"Vanessa, I cannot use private documents you were not authorized to take."
Vanessa's frustration surfaced.
"Then how are you supposed to prove anything?"
"By obtaining it properly."
"That is exactly what Ethan counts on."
"No."
Claire pushed the binder back.
"Ethan counts on people deciding the rules are inconvenient when they are angry."
Vanessa stared at her.
Claire continued.
"That is how people become like him."
The words landed harder than Claire intended.
Vanessa looked down.
"So what do I do?"
"Tell the independent committee the appendix exists."
"And my father will know it was me."
"Yes."
"You make that sound simple."
"It is not simple."
Claire leaned back.
"It is only clear."
Vanessa sat in silence for nearly a minute.
Then she picked up the binder.
"Fine."
"Fine what?"
"I will tell them."
At noon, the independent review committee issued document requests to Ethan's strategy team, finance, and the Hart family office.
At 12:14, Charles called Vanessa.
She did not answer.
At 12:22, he called again.
At 12:31, Ethan texted her.
WE NEED TO TALK BEFORE YOU MAKE THIS WORSE.
Vanessa showed Claire the message.
Claire said nothing.
Vanessa deleted it.
By 3:00 p.m., the review committee had confirmed the missing downside appendix existed in Hart's internal materials.
Charles responded that it was a preliminary stress case not intended for board reliance.
Ethan said he had never seen it.
Then Priya found an email showing the appendix had been sent to his strategy director two days before the final Northstar model was revised.
The investigation was closing in.
Yet that evening, something unexpected happened.
Samuel Reed, the pension fund representative who had voted with Claire on the trust issue, called her directly.
"You are moving too fast."
Claire frowned.
"The board appointed the review, not me."
"Perception matters."
"To whom?"
"Investors who think this is becoming a personal war."
Claire looked at the city lights outside Aurelia's office.
"It is not personal."
"Then prove it."
"How?"
"Stop talking about Ethan and start talking about the company."
"I have not spoken publicly at all."
"That is not enough anymore."
Reed's tone softened.
"Someone is telling investors you plan to remove Ethan, break up Cole Meridian, and sell the assets."
Claire stood.
"That is false."
"I believe you."
"Who is saying it?"
"Not directly."
"Samuel."
He exhaled.
"A communications consultant working for a group of shareholders."
Claire's mind moved quickly.
"Which shareholders?"
"I do not know."
"Find out."
"I am trying."
After the call, Claire asked Daniel to bring her the restaurant ownership ledger.
He looked confused.
"Why?"
"Because if someone wants to turn me into a faceless raider, I need to remind them what I actually build."
Daniel placed the ledger on her desk.
Her phone buzzed again.
This time it was a news alert.
The headline stopped her cold.
SECRET BILLIONAIRE EX TARGETS COLE MERIDIAN CEO AFTER RESTAURANT SHOWDOWN.
Claire read the first paragraph.
The article described the Aurelia confrontation in detail.
Including dialogue only three people at the table should have known.
Claire looked toward the dining room.

Someone had leaked the scene.
And the version made her sound like she had planned the entire thing for revenge.
