Chapter 8 - The Price of a Lie.

Adrian Wells returned to Cole Meridian at 6:40 that evening through the employee entrance.
He looked like a man who had spent twenty-four hours realizing that silence could become more dangerous than truth.
Mara, Robert Ames, Priya, and an outside governance attorney met him in a small conference room on the twenty-ninth floor.
Claire attended by video from Aurelia because counsel wanted the interview controlled and formally documented.
Ethan was not invited.
Adrian noticed Claire's face on the screen and looked away.
Robert began simply.
"Why did your account receive the Bennett Meridian trust?"
Adrian rubbed his hands together.
"Ethan asked me to find out who was behind the entity."
Mara leaned forward.
"When?"
"About eight months ago."
Claire felt no surprise this time.
Only confirmation.
Robert continued.
"Why?"
"He thought the shareholder was building influence before Northstar."
"Did he know it was Claire Bennett?"
Adrian hesitated.
"Not at first."
"When did he suspect?"
"After I found the Bennett name in the trust."
Claire's voice came through the speaker.
"Did you tell him?"
Adrian looked at the screen.
"Yes."
Mara's expression became unreadable.
"How long ago?"
"Seven months."
The lie Ethan had told the board was now clear.
He had not discovered Claire's connection at Aurelia.
He had known for months.
Robert moved to the missing page.
"Why did you recreate the corporate copy?"
Adrian's face tightened.
"Because Ethan wanted a clean briefing file without personal information that might distract other executives."
"Did he ask you to remove the signature page?"
"No."
Claire watched carefully.
Adrian continued.
"I removed a schedule listing trust beneficiaries and rebuilt the PDF."
"And the signature page?"
"I think I deleted it by mistake when I rebuilt the document."
Robert's eyebrows lifted.
"You think?"
"I was working from scans."
"Why not correct it?"
Adrian looked down.
"I did not notice until this week."
Mara's voice sharpened.
"And the fake page sent to Claire?"
Adrian looked genuinely confused.
"What fake page?"
Robert slid a copy toward him.
Adrian stared at it.
"I have never seen that."
The outside attorney asked several more questions.
No one could yet prove who created the false page.
But Adrian's account established something equally serious for Ethan's position.
Ethan had known Claire was connected to Bennett Meridian for months and had concealed that knowledge while repeatedly arguing the shareholder was an unknown outside force.
Then Priya asked the question Claire had been waiting for.
"Did Ethan ask you to work on Northstar?"
Adrian swallowed.
"Yes."
"What did you do?"
"Coordinated revisions between strategy and the deal team."
"Did you alter the financial model?"
"Not directly."
"Who did?"
Adrian stared at the table.
"Ethan's strategy director, Mark Delaney."
Priya's voice remained calm.
"Why was the revised version uploaded under my credentials?"
Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.
"Mark could not access the restricted finance folder."
"So how did he upload it?"
"Ethan told me to make sure it got into the board packet before the deadline."
Priya's face changed.
"That did not answer my question."
Adrian looked at her.
"Your laptop was still logged in after the executive forecast meeting."
The room went silent.
Priya's voice dropped.
"You used my laptop?"
"I uploaded the file."
"Under my name."
"Yes."
"Without telling me."
"Yes."
Claire watched Priya sit back slowly.
This was not a dramatic conspiracy.
It was something more believable and, in its own way, more damaging.
A culture had formed around Ethan where urgency justified shortcuts and authority blurred responsibility.
Northstar was not merely an aggressive deal anymore.
The process itself had become unreliable.
Mara ended the interview after ninety minutes.
Then she called Ethan.
He arrived twelve minutes later, furious that the meeting had taken place without him.
Mara did not raise her voice.
"Adrian confirmed you knew Claire Bennett was connected to Bennett Meridian seven months ago."
Ethan looked through the glass wall at Adrian.
"He is protecting himself."
"He also admitted uploading a revised Northstar model under Priya's credentials."
"I never instructed him to use her login."
"He says you told him to get the model into the packet."
"That is not the same thing."
"Correct."
Mara's tone was colder now.
"Which is why an independent review will determine what happened."
Ethan turned toward Claire's image on the screen.
"This is what you wanted."
Claire answered quietly.
"I wanted the numbers explained."
"You wanted my job."
"I never asked for it."
"Not yet."
Mara interrupted.
"Enough."
Ethan looked back at her.
"What happens now?"
"The board will appoint an independent committee tomorrow morning."
"And Northstar?"
"Still paused."
Ethan laughed once.
"You are going to destroy months of work over a login mistake."
Priya stood.
"It was my name on a model I did not approve."
Ethan looked at her.
"No one is blaming you."
Priya's expression hardened.
"That is exactly why it matters."
The meeting ended shortly after.
Claire closed her laptop at Aurelia and walked into the empty dining room.
Daniel was waiting near the bar.
"Bad?"
"Worse for Ethan than for the company, if the board handles it correctly."
Daniel nodded toward a table near the window.
"Someone left this for you."
A plain envelope sat beneath the candle holder at Table Twelve.
Claire opened it.
Inside was a printed copy of the Northstar acquisition timeline.
One date had been circled in red.
It was the date Ethan proposed to Vanessa.
