Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

Mark watched his newborn son sleep for three agonizing minutes.
He committed every tiny, perfect feature to his memory.
The kind pediatric nurse eventually tapped him gently on the shoulder.
"Your legal team's time is up, Mr. Sterling," she whispered sympathetically.
Mark nodded slowly and stepped away from the warm plastic incubator.
He walked back through the heavy double doors to find David waiting.
The burly security guard watched them both with a very wary expression.
"We need to move fast," David said, adjusting his sharp glasses.
"Your mother has already filed a motion for an emergency psychiatric hold on Sarah."
Mark felt a fresh wave of blinding anger wash over him.
"She wants to trap Sarah in this hospital while she takes the baby," Mark concluded.
David nodded grimly as they walked rapidly toward the elevators.
"We need undeniable proof that the bruising on Sarah's legs was not an accident," David explained.
"We need an independent medical evaluation right now."
Mark pulled his cell phone out and began scrolling rapidly through his contacts.
He remembered a brilliant trauma surgeon he had met at a charity gala last year.
Dr. Aris Thorne was known for his absolute integrity and his sharp eye for domestic abuse patterns.
"I have a guy," Mark said, pressing the call button.

They stepped into the empty elevator just as the call finally connected.
He was going to build an impenetrable legal fortress around his wife and child.
