CHAPTER 1: The Silence That Followed

The moment Caleb stepped into the hospital, something shifted.

Not loudly. Not dramatically.

But enough.

A nurse who had been speaking mid-sentence suddenly stopped. A doctor turned his head. Even the distant hum of conversation seemed to fade into something cautious… observant.

Eleanor noticed.

At first, she brushed it off. Hospitals were tense places. People stared all the time.

But then Caleb walked past her without a word.

No greeting. No acknowledgment.

Just a calm, controlled expression she had never seen before.

“Caleb,” she called, her voice tight. “You should hear my side of what happened.”

He stopped.

Slowly turned.

And for the first time in his life, he looked at her not as a son—but as a stranger.

“They already have,” he said quietly.

Eleanor frowned. “What does that mean?”

“It means,” Caleb replied, “you don’t get to decide the story anymore.”

A cold feeling crept into her chest.

For the first time that day… she felt it.

Fear.
