CHAPTER 3: The Cracks Begin

“Mrs. Sterling?”
Eleanor looked up.
Two men stood in front of her. Not hospital staff.
Suits.
Calm. Professional.
Unfamiliar.
“Yes?”
“We’d like to ask you a few questions regarding the incident at the residence.”
Her spine stiffened. “There was no ‘incident.’ My daughter-in-law is dramatic and—”
“We have footage,” one of them said.
Silence.
Real silence this time.
Not the kind you ignore.
The kind that presses in.
Eleanor laughed lightly, but it came out wrong. “That’s impossible.”
“It isn’t.”
Her mind raced.
Footage?
No.
That house had no cameras.
At least… none she knew about.
“Your son authorized full installation six months ago,” the man added, as if reading her thoughts.
That was when something inside her truly broke.
