Chapter 1 - The Stranger in the Corridor.

.The hospital corridor had never felt so narrow to Leah Bennett.

Bright ceiling panels washed everything in clean white light, while the warm wood walls made the maternity floor look almost peaceful from a distance.

Nothing about it felt peaceful now.

Leah stood barefoot beside the nurses' station with her newborn daughter, Emma, pressed against her chest beneath a cream blanket.

Her hospital gown hung loosely from one shoulder, and a faint bruise darkened the side of her cheek.

She had not slept for more than forty minutes at a time since the delivery.

She had barely eaten.

And now Derek Sloan was walking toward her in a bright blue suit as though the entire hospital belonged to him.

"Give me the baby, Leah."

His voice was controlled, but the anger beneath it was unmistakable.

Leah stepped backward.

"No."

Derek kept coming.

A nurse in green scrubs moved around the desk, but Derek lifted one hand and pointed toward her.

"Stay out of this."

The nurse hesitated only because Leah had already learned what Derek relied on most.

He relied on hesitation.

He relied on people wondering whether they had misunderstood him.

He relied on expensive clothes, calm words, and the assumption that a man who looked successful could not possibly be dangerous.

Leah knew better.

She turned her body so Emma was protected between her arms and the wall.

"You are not taking her."

Derek's jaw tightened.

"You don't get to decide that anymore."

He lunged forward and reached for Leah's arm.

A black sleeve cut between them.

The movement was so fast that Leah did not understand what had happened until Derek's wrist was caught in another man's hand.

The stranger was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed almost entirely in black.

His dark hair was cut short at the sides.

His expression was calm enough to be unsettling.

Derek tried to pull free.

The stranger turned his arm away from Leah and shoved him back with one controlled movement.

Derek lost his footing and went down hard on the polished floor.

The corridor went silent.

The stranger looked at him without raising his voice.

"Hitting a woman."

He paused.

"Pathetic."

Derek stared up at him, stunned less by the fall than by the fact that someone had dared to interfere.

"Do you know who I am?"

The stranger did not answer.

The nurse hurried forward holding a clipboard.

"Mr. Moretti, the authorization."

Leah's eyes moved from the nurse to the stranger.

Moretti.

The name meant something even to people who had never entered the worlds of private security, finance, or high-level corporate law.

The stranger took a black pen from inside his coat.

He clicked it once.

He signed the final page while Derek was still on the floor.

Leah's breath caught.

"Why are you helping me?"

The man finished the signature.

He capped the pen.

Then he finally looked directly at her.

His gaze softened by only a fraction when it moved to the sleeping baby in her arms.

"Because this should have been stopped before it reached you."

Leah swallowed.

"Who are you?"

He held the clipboard out to the nurse.

"I am Luca Moretti."

A security door at the end of the corridor clicked open.

Two hospital security officers stepped through.

Derek pushed himself upright and gave Luca a look filled with fury.

"You just made the biggest mistake of your life."

Luca adjusted one cuff of his black coat.

"No."

His eyes stayed on Derek.

"You made yours when you came back."

May you like

Leah felt the blood drain from her face.

She had never told Luca that Derek had been here before.
