Chapter 9 - Ethan's Last Warning.

Leah nearly stopped the video.
Her hand hovered over the keyboard while Ethan's frozen face stared back at her from the screen.
For eleven months, the word accident had been the only stable piece of his death.
A wet road.
A sharp turn.
A truck crossing too close to the center line.
An ordinary tragedy with no villain to blame.
Now even that certainty had been taken from her.
"I can stop it."
Luca stood near the window.
Leah shook her head.
"No."
She pressed play again.
Ethan drew a slow breath in the recording.
"I found transfers from the original Moretti partnership accounts into shell companies tied to Sloan Holdings."
Luca's face hardened.
"Derek didn't stop after we caught him years ago."
Ethan looked down at something on his desk.
"He got smarter."
Leah listened as her husband explained that he had quietly retained a small number of shares after leaving Moretti Global.
The shares had grown in value as the company expanded.
He had placed them into a private family trust because he did not want Derek or Victoria to know they still existed.
"The trust becomes fully active when my first child is born."
Leah looked at Emma.
Ethan's voice softened on the video.
"If our baby is here, then I missed the moment I wanted more than anything."
Leah closed her eyes.
Her tears fell silently.
"I'm sorry."
Ethan's recorded voice broke slightly.
"I thought hiding all of this would protect you."
Luca looked away.
"I was wrong."
Ethan continued.
"Luca has authority to activate the trust's emergency protections if anyone tries to pressure you after the baby's birth."
Leah looked at Luca.
The clipboard.
The signature.
It finally made sense.
"That's what you signed."
Luca nodded.
"Part of it."
On screen, Ethan held up several printed pages.
"Derek needs one of three things to gain influence over the trust."
"Your voluntary signature."
"A court finding that you cannot manage your affairs."
"Or custody of our child under a temporary emergency order."
Leah's skin went cold.
Every event of the last twenty-four hours aligned into one terrible pattern.
Porter's fake evaluation.
The altered chart note.
The forged transfer request.
Derek reaching for Emma.
Victoria's guardianship petition.
They were not separate acts.
They were different roads to the same destination.
Ethan leaned closer to the camera.
"There is one more thing you need to know."
The video flickered.
Luca stepped toward the laptop.
The image stabilized.
"The person helping Derek works inside St. Catherine's."
Nora stiffened.
Ethan continued.
"I don't know who it is."
"But someone accessed my records before the crash."
"Someone knew when I would be discharged from my cardiology appointment that week."
Leah looked at Nora.
"Cardiology?"
She had never known Ethan had seen a cardiologist.
The video ended with Ethan giving one final instruction.
"Trust evidence, not appearances."
The screen went black.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then Nora's pager sounded.
She checked it.
"I need to go to the nurses' station."
Luca stopped her.
"Why?"
"A medication discrepancy."
His eyes narrowed.
"For which patient?"
Nora looked down again.
Her face changed.
"Leah."
Leah stared at her.
"I'm not taking any medication right now."
Nora moved toward the door.
"Exactly."
Luca followed.
Leah stayed with Emma, watching through the glass as Nora opened a locked medication drawer outside.
She lifted a small sealed packet.
Then she froze.
A label with Leah's name had been attached to a sedative order she had never received from a doctor.
Luca looked through the glass at Leah.
No words were necessary.

Someone inside the hospital was still trying to make her look unstable.
And this time, they were willing to manufacture the symptoms themselves.
