Chapter 11 - The Hearing.
The emergency guardianship hearing began at three o'clock from a hospital conference room.
Leah sat at one end of the table with Emma sleeping in a bassinet beside her.
Luca sat two seats away, close enough to help but far enough that no one could claim he was directing her answers.
Nora waited outside with Dr. Chen.
On the large screen across the room, Victoria Sloan appeared beside two attorneys.
Derek sat at the far edge of their table in the same bright blue suit.
His expression had changed.
The anger from the corridor was gone.
Now he looked concerned.
Leah almost admired the transformation.
The judge opened the hearing by reminding everyone that the only issue before the court was immediate safety.
Victoria's attorney spoke first.
He described Leah as recently bereaved, exhausted after childbirth, and emotionally overwhelmed.
Every statement was technically true.
That was what made the argument so ugly.
Then he added the lies.
He said Leah had behaved unpredictably with hospital staff.
He said she had expressed a desire to abandon responsibility.
He said she had allowed a violent stranger to interfere in a family matter.
Leah kept her hands folded together beneath the table.
Luca had told her not to perform calmness.
"Just tell the truth."
When it was her turn, Leah looked directly at the camera.
"I am tired."
Victoria's attorney shifted slightly.
"I am grieving."
Leah continued.
"I am also fully aware of where I am, who my daughter is, and why I am afraid of the Sloan family."
The judge asked about Dr. Elaine Porter.
Leah explained the conversation exactly as she remembered it.
Then Dr. Chen appeared and described her independent assessment.
Victoria's expression remained perfectly composed.
Until Nora presented the forged medication order.
Then Derek looked at his mother.
The movement was quick.
But Luca noticed.
So did Leah.
The judge asked who entered the order.
The hospital attorney explained the access logs and Dr. Mercer's statement.
Victoria's lawyer objected to the relevance.
The judge overruled him.
Then Luca's attorney submitted the reflected security footage from the corridor.
The judge watched Derek move toward Leah.
She watched Luca intercept him.
She watched Derek fall after resisting the movement.
Derek leaned toward his lawyer and whispered something.
The judge looked at him.
"Mr. Sloan, did you tell police that Mrs. Bennett called you to the hospital?"
"Yes."
"Do you have that call record?"
Derek hesitated.
"The call may have come through an application."
Leah almost smiled.
Another small alteration.
Another detail becoming complicated only after evidence challenged it.
The judge asked Leah one final question.
"Mrs. Bennett, do you wish to leave the hospital with Mr. Sloan or Mrs. Sloan?"
"No."
"Do you wish either of them to make decisions for your child?"
"No."
The judge denied the emergency guardianship request.
Leah's shoulders dropped for the first time all day.
Then the judge continued.
"I am also ordering that neither petitioner approach Mrs. Bennett or the child pending review of the submitted evidence."
Victoria finally lost her smile.
Only for one second.
But Leah saw it.
Derek saw it too.
The hearing ended.
Leah expected relief.
Instead, Luca remained tense.
"What's wrong?"
"Victoria didn't expect to win."
Leah stared at him.
"She just spent hours trying to take my daughter."
"Yes."
"Why do that if she didn't expect to win?"
Luca closed the laptop.
"To make us show our evidence."
Leah looked at the documents spread across the table.
"You think the hearing was bait?"
"I think she wanted to know what Ethan left behind."
Nora rushed into the conference room.
"Luca."
She was holding her phone.
"Someone just broke into the old records archive."
