Chapter 10: The Brightest Yard

Six months had passed since that terrible night at the estate.
Thomas stood on the wide wooden porch of their brand new home.
He held a steaming mug of coffee, watching the golden afternoon sun filter through the trees.
There were no iron cages here, and no cold, artificial smiles.
Instead, there was an expansive green lawn that stretched all the way to a sparkling creek.
"Dad, look at this!" Ethan shouted excitedly from across the yard.
The boy was running at full speed, chasing a clumsy golden retriever puppy they had adopted the week before.
Ethan’s laughter echoed brightly through the warm, open air.
He was a completely different child now—happy, safe, and entirely free.
The legal battle with Vanessa had been swift and utterly merciless.
Marcus had secured everything, leaving her with nothing but a finalized divorce decree and a permanent restraining order.
She was a closed chapter in a book they would never open again.
Thomas walked down the porch steps and stepped into the soft grass.
He knelt down just as Ethan and the puppy crashed into him in a tangle of happy giggles.
"Did you see how fast he ran?" Ethan asked, breathless and beaming.
"I saw it, buddy," Thomas replied, affectionately ruffling his son's hair.
"I think he loves this new yard just as much as you do."
Ethan looked around at the tall, friendly oak trees and the bright blue sky.
He wrapped his small arms tightly around his father's neck.
"This is the best home ever, Dad."
Thomas hugged him back, feeling a profound and absolute peace finally settle over his heart.
"Yes, it is, Ethan."

"And it belongs entirely to us."
The dark nightmare was over, and their real life had finally begun.
